Ambrose Salisbury begins manufacturing velocipedes in Boston.

A primitive form of bicycle, which is generally regarded as being invented in Germany a year earlier, it has no pedals and is propelled by the rider kicking his feet along the ground. Pierre Lallement of Connecticut patents the first pedal bicycle with equal-size wheels in the U.S. in 1866, and subsequently moves to Boston.
